Outside Lands 2017, an unforgetable musical experience where Bomba Estereo, Kali Uchis and Mon Laferte blazed!

The Outside Lands Music Festival (https://www.sfoutsidelands.com) has taken place each year in August in the gorgeous Golden Gate Park Francisco since 2008. The 2017 edition marked the tenth anniversary of this sold-out event, and organizers wanted to celebrate it with a great lineup including Gorillaz, Metallica and The Who as headliners for the three-day festival.

Outside Lands made it clear it wants to represent the spirit of the Bay Area by including good food and good wines. Gourmet fast food and wine and craft beer tasting areas are among the main characteristic of the event, supported by 70,000 people daily audience members. Special booths, DJ tents, an all-chocolate market, food trucks, a farmers market, voter registration booth… too long of a list to describe the additional amenities.

And there is music, of course. Plenty of it!

Among Latino artists performing at Outside Lands this year, Kali Uchis was the first one to take the stage on Friday, August 11, 2017. The 23-year old Colombian-born singer and producer was well received by her followers who sung along her. Uchis is becoming popular in part because of her particular hip-hop and pop style and original music videos. However, her voice sounded out of tune at a times and her choreography was very repetitive.

Saturday was Bomba Estereo’s turn. The Colombian band is already well known and it showed at Outside Lands, where a big crew received them. Simón Mejía and Liliana Saumet started the band in 2005 as an electro-cumbia music group and over the years they introduced local instruments as well as more afro-colombian tunes. Their last album, “Ayo,” is a good example of this combination.

They are currently touring USA and Europe promoting their newest album. They have a great bond with their audience, particularly Liliana, the frontwoman of the band, whose voice and moves on the stage are part of the trademark of Bomba Estereo.

Mon Laferte performed Sunday, August 13th, on the last day of the festival. She offered a great concert where she played mostly songs from her last album, “La Trenza.”

The Chilean-born singer, now a resident of Mexico, was charming and her audience responded with long applauses and cheers. Laferte transmitted the warm atmosphere of a cabaret where you could imagine her under pale lights singing for a full floor of dancers and nostalgic visitors. Her songs sounded clear, crisp and honest. And yes, you hate it when her concert is over!

Thousands of people gather in front of each of the four stages to see and enjoy their favorite artists.

People just want to have fun!

And some show their talents, like this local artist, who is creating a sculpture with… masking tape!

A few decided three is better than two, at least when it comes to beer!

Outside Lands is more than a festival, it is a total sensorial experience. The legendary band The Who closed the 2017 edition of Outside Lands —you can’t ask for any better “see you next year” message!
